Why pH Balance?

Often you hear the term pH balance, but why is it important to our health? Most of us never contemplate our pH as being a part of our wellness regimen when we’re trying to stay healthy. Instead, we reach for vitamin C, zinc, and other supportive vitamins, minerals, and herbs, but, a stable pH can protect us from the inside out.

Not only can a balanced pH support our immune system long term, but disease typically does not thrive in a body with a balanced pH.

What is meant by pH balance?

Our pH balance is the manner in which our body handles acidity and alkalinity — in this case, from the foods we eat — and while our bodies are amazing at keeping us in line, eating a more alkaline diet may help protect our overall wellness.

pH is a measure of acidity or alkalinity in our fluids and tissues and ranges from 0 to 14. The more acidic something is, the lower the pH, and the higher the pH the more alkaline it is. Our bodies function best at a pH of roughly 6.4 to 7.3.

What disrupts our pH?

In short, the standard American diet (SAD) greatly impacts our pH balance, thus our health. It’s laden with unhealthy fats and over-processed foods that are high in sugar, in addition to a diet that is notoriously low in fiber, essential vitamins and minerals, and whole foods including fruits and vegetables. The SAD disrupts our health and creates a very acidic environment in our bodies, leading to many health issues and disease.

An influx of acid impacts our body systemically, and while it can keep your pH normalized for the most part, in the end, it’s how hard it has to work to get there. Our kidneys control our pH and electrolyte levels, and when we’re overwhelmed with acid electrolytes such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium, are all used to combat it. As a result, the kidneys begin to eliminate minerals through the urine, and in the process, rob our bodies — bones, cells, tissues, etc. — from these essential minerals that support our health and wellness.

Acidity impacts how our bodies naturally detox because our cells lack enough minerals to dispose of waste and properly oxygenate the body. We’re also left with the inability to absorb vitamins resulting from mineral loss, which suppresses our immune system.

Ultimately, your body is forced to work overtime to maintain a neutral pH while depleting it from nutrients it needs to carry out other basic functions. While you may not be diagnosed with a pH imbalance, you’re constantly forcing your body into overdrive which may alter your immunity and advance the aging process.

Elements That Uphold Acidity

  • Heavy alcohol use
  • Drugs (including aspirin, opioids, and sedatives)
  • Overuse of antibiotics
  • High amounts of processed and refined foods
  • Overconsumption of food coloring, artificial sweeteners, and preservatives
  • Low levels of dietary fiber

Cut Down Consumption of Acidic Foods

If you’re eating the standard American diet, this is a good place to begin. Be mindful and start to eliminate the following:

  • Added sugars
  • Processed deli meats
  • Foods high in sodium
  • Fried foods
  • Dairy products
  • Caffeine
  • Alcohol

Begin Eating Alkaline Foods

Dark leafy greens
Non-starchy veggies – Avocado, radishes, mushrooms, broccoli, celery, etc..
Superfoods – Spirulina, chlorella, sea veggies, bone broth, etc..
Healthy fats – olive oil, coconut oil, fish, nuts, seeds, etc..

Reduce Drugs, Chemicals, and Toxins

A variety of different drugs, chemicals, toxins, and pollutants all disrupt a balanced pH and can contribute to increased acidity. From alcohol and caffeine to non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, opioids, and sedatives, these all play a role in our pH.
